Can you teach Chinese to children when you don’t know it?

I was wondering if anyone agrees that the language can be taught when you don’t know it?  I have been trying to find schools for my children but have found they are too expensive or the time the classes are offered doesn’t work for my family.  So I thought I’d teach them, myself,  the basic greetings, letters and numbers etc. until I could get them formal training.  What are your thoughts about this and if good, what are some recommended teaching curriculums?
