K-12 State-Adopted Chinese Language Curriculum for Chinese Teachers and Schools in Tennessee

I have been hearing wonderful news recently about Chinese language programs jump-starting in Tennessee. Did you know that K-12 Better Chinese materials and online programs are state-adopted in Tennessee?

What does it mean to be state-adopted? Last year, Better Chinese participated in a review process that examined whether our curriculum aptly correlates with Tennessee state standards for foreign language learning. Better Chinese sent our materials to the state’s various school district members and also to a specifically-selected panel of Tennessee teachers and administrators for review. Better Chinese representatives also traveled to Tennessee for Q&A sessions hosted by the ...

Culture Center of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston

Better Chinese exhibits at CCFLT 2010 (Colorado Conference of Foreign Language Teachers)

Happy New Year!

This year, Better Chinese will exhibit at CCFLT in February.  This will be our third year attending the conference.  We are excited to see old friends and meet new ones at the conference.

We will have our K-12 curricular materials there to share with teachers and administrators.  I hope the educators will have a chance to flip through our new teacher’s guides for My First Chinese Words (Lower Elementary), My First Chinese Reader (Elementary), Discovering Chinese (Beginner Secondary), and Magical Tour of China (Intermediate Secondary).  I also hope that everyone will have a chance to try our new ...

Mandarin Teaching Credential Program for Aspiring Teachers

At Better Chinese, several of us received our master’s degrees from Stanford University’s School of Education (SUSE) and have benefited greatly from our academic experience there. Thus, I was especially delighted when I discovered that Stanford University announced they are offering a Mandarin teaching credential through the Stanford Teaching Education Program (STEP) beginning in June 2010.

I’m glad to see the launch of this teaching credential program at Stanford. It shows that the demand for Chinese teachers is needed to keep up with the growing number of classrooms filled with students wishing to learn the language!

For readers who are aspiring to ...

Online Learning System to Supplement Chinese Classrooms

Chinese Language Teaching (Is CLT a commonly used term now?  Much like ELT?) has been through a lot of changes, fueled by better understanding the needs of the students and teachers.  We begin to see that publishers and program developers start to develop materials in the market space they want to serve.

However, the value of a successful program or framework is not to do whatever the market demands.  The real value is the developer’s ability to analyze & digest the market requirements to come up with a novel and holistic solutions for the learners and educators.

Recently, I’ve joined the craze, ...

Engaging Students in Fun Chinese Language-Learning

I was forwarded an interesting article about the changing approach to teaching Chinese in Singapore: http://news.asiaone.com/News/Education/Story/A1Story20091123-181674.html.

The Singapore Ministry of Education is trying to push for more creative and tech-savvy approaches to teaching Chinese to make the language more interesting and appealing to students. Use of blogs, pop music, and interactive websites to learn Chinese aim to replace the practices of rote-memorization and daily listening quizzes in the classroom, which dilute student interest in the subject. The ministry states that this new language-learning method has been quite positive among Singapore’s students.

Here at Better Chinese, making Chinese learning fun and engaging is ...

Implementing Interactive Chinese Programs with Online Lessons and Homework

ACTFL this past weekend was great!  I learned a lot about the challenges teachers are facing today, especially the ones who have been teaching for more than 2 years with students who have been with their Chinese program successfully.

I also had fun presenting our topic “Implementing Interactive Chinese Programs with Online Lessons and Homework” to roomful of teachers!  For those who didn’t have a chance to come in to the room, I will share my presentation shortly on K12Mandarin.

State Adopted Pre K-12 Chinese Curriulum Publisher at ACTFL 2009

We are so excited to be going to San Diego for this year’s ACTFL!  November has been a crazy month (or in Chinese, they say… After visiting Frankfurt, attending EARCOS in Manila, dropping by Hong Kong and Taiwan, we are off to ACTFL in San Diego.

Well, this is a pretty minor flight, coming from Palo Alto.  I am personally excited to see many friends and peers that I haven’t seen for a while.  As a team, we have a pretty full line up to share with educators our progress since last year.

We are so happy to announced that Better ...

International School Conference in Manila 2009

This year’s international school conference is held in Manila from Nov 1st to Nov 3rd.  I had the privilege of attending the conference and had many great conversations with headmasters and administrators around the Asia Pacific region.

Mandarin education is becoming an important part of the international school curriculum. For existing programs, the schools want to make sure that they are addressing the changes in education today. They want to want make that they can provide something that will have continuity and are thinking about how to better address the different needs of heritage students vs. students who have no prior Chinese ...

Frankfurt Book Fair 2009 (Frankfurter Buchmesse)

WOW.  What a phenomenal week in Frankfurt?!  It was my first time to the Frankfurt book fair, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I was there from Oct 14 to Oct 18 and was fortunate enough to meet many publishers from all over the world.

In the US, after our curricular series got adopted by 7 different states, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Idaho, North Carolina, and Utah, we thought it will be great to see what’s the CFL market like in Europe and other parts of the world.  Being adopted by these states not only confirmed the quality and appropriateness of our ...
